This Fall proved to be another busy term for philanthropic events. The house feels that philanthropy is one of the key issues needing attention if we are to achieve our goal of winning the Maxwell award. When an "Adopt A Highway" program was suggested, we agreed that such a program would be a great way to honor our late brother, Jon Melton, who passed away July 19, 1995 in a motorcycle accident. The stretch of road we cover is on highway 41 from the intersection at highway 141 extending four miles south. The sign at each end of the stretch of highway reads: "Phi Kappa Tau - In Memory of Jon Melton". The road clean-up is a semiannual event, taking place every Spring and Fall.

This sign can be seen on the corner US 41 and US 141

Another new and exciting event included in this year's philanthropy program Is the "Fun Run." Last Spring was the first time that the event was held. The run consited of a 3K and a 7K course along the streets of Houghton and Hancock. Several local commuinity members along with many students from MTU participated in the event generating $650. The money was donated to our new national philanthropy, the "
Hole in the Wall Gang." The house received honorable Mention for one of the highest donations among the national chapters.

Events that we are continuing to conduct include tutoring for Hancock High School , cutting wood for Friends of the Elderly, a pancack breakfast fundraiser for Hancock Elementary Schools this December 6th, and another Fun Run or similar event in the spring. If everything goes right, the philanthropy program is well on its way to helping or house win another Maxwell Award this year.
